The Ultimate Guide to Non-Toxic, Natural Dental Care
Over the years I’ve become extremely health conscious about what personal care products I use. Green products have become even more important for me after having my babies. This also includes doing a complete overhaul of my dental care routine and switching to non-toxic, natural dental care products such as natural toothpaste and other clean dental products.
I’m pretty sure you are also well aware of how badly many of these personal care products are. But how about our dental care products? Have you thought about what’s actually in your standard toothpaste or mouthwash? If you already use natural toothpaste, then you are winning, but if not, no worries, I’ve got you!
Why Switch to Natural Dental Care Products?
Did you know that anything you put in your mouth will quickly be absorbed into your bloodstream, even if you don’t swallow it?
Unfortunately, many drugstore dental care products are full of nasty chemicals, toxic additives, dangerous endocrine disruptors, inflammatory agents, and carcinogens. I was shocked when I learned that there are over 82,000 chemicals approved for use in our personal care products? (Source) and (Source).
But guess what, researchers have found that less than 20 percent of the chemicals used in personal care products have been tested for safety?! (Face Palm Emoji)
And….. don’t rely on the FDA for this kind of stuff because they DO NOT systematically assess the safety of our personal care products.
So, I’ve made the switch to non-toxic, natural dental care products. It’s the stuff that goes inside of your mouth, day after day. We gotta take it more seriously, ya know!
Today, I’m sharing my top five non-toxic, natural dental care products for keeping your mouth and smile insanely healthy.
1. Switch to Non-Toxic Toothpaste
The number one thing you can do now to start your natural dental care
Look For Toothpaste That Doesn’t Contain…
- Fluoride
- Sodium Lauryl/Laureth Sulfate
- Triclosan
- Diethanolamine (DEA)
- Sodium Hydroxide
- Propylene glycol
- and more!
These are just a few of the nasty chemicals found in regular toothpaste.
Instead, look for a natural toothpaste that has anticavity, antibacterial agents, and breath fresheners using …
- Activated Charcoal
- Neem
- Tea Tree Oil
- Peppermint
- Bentonite clay
- or other natural ingredients
Here are a few of my tried-and-true favorite non-toxic options:
Try: Redmond Earthpaste
2. Use Activated Charcoal for Pearly White Teeth
If you’re looking for natural dental care products, then it’s time to say buh-bye to your Crest White Strips and get on the Activated Charcoal bandwagon if you want to up your natural dental care routine. Sounds pretty bizarre but keep reading because activated charcoal is pretty amazing for getting teeth super-duper white.
I use this charcoal whitening powder 3x per week to keep my teeth white. It naturally whitens my teeth without any harsh whitening peroxides.
Try: My Magic Mud | Active Wow Teeth Whitening Charcoal
Pssst: other than my beloved activated charcoal powders, I also use RockStar White Teeth Whitening Gel for special
3. Get a Tongue Scraper ASAP!
If you use a tongue scraper, props! If you have no clue what I’m talking about, you need to put one in your Amazon cart, stat! A tongue scraper will get your tongue squeaky clean and in turn, your entire mouth will feel amazing. I heard about this from an Ayurveda nutrition class I once took and bought one from Amazon that same night. This was almost 3 years ago and has been a game-changer in my natural dental care routine.
In just a few seconds, tongue scrapping removes gross bacterial build-up, fungi, and food debris from the surface of the tongue. You know that nasty white film on your tongue that your toothbrush just can’t get rid of?
This ancient ayurvedic technique is also known to gently stimulate the digestive system and of course, it freshens the breath in a way that can not be achieved with brushing.
I use this copper tongue scrapper because it’s antibacterial and
4. Floss With Oils
Dabbing essential oil to your floss is also another great way to elevate your oral care routine. Adding essential oil makes your flossing technique so much more powerful by seeping into your gums and killing germs, and bacteria deep between your teeth. Get flossy and keep gums happy.
Try My Favorite Oils: Happy Gum Drops | Happy Gum Drops for the Kiddos | OraWellnes Healthy Mouth Blend.
Essential Oil Infused Floss: try CocoFloss and Dr. Tungs.
5. Swish, Spit and Shine with Oil Pulling
You’ve probably heard of this if you’ve looked into non-toxic and natural dental care products, and maybe even tried it. Just a little swish-swish of coconut oil for fresher breath and whiter teeth? Oil pulling is another amazing, ancient Ayurvedic method of detoxifying the mouth and whitening teeth organically.
Oil pulling is the act of swishing some oil in your mouth to pull harmful toxins and bacteria out
A recent study found that oil pulling reduced things like plaque buildup, gingivitis, and the cavity-causing bacterium Streptococcus mutants. Just swish, spit and let your teeth shine.
